BYC member @maryhysong is perhaps our most knowledgeable and experienced gardener. She has a wonderful web site on gardening in the Arizona desert that I think you would find very much helpful. You can find it here. Perhaps most serendipitously, she's in Claypool, so practically a neighbor. Check it out, you can see what is possible in your locality and she shows you how to do it.
