In the Brooder
My Rhode Island Red has been limping and I noticed she has a black toenail with some blood and some kind of mucous on it. I was planning on soaking it in salt water then putting bacitracin (I live on a small island with no access to a chicken vet for vaccinations or special chicken antibiotics) on it and wrapping it in some gauze and taping that. Is this the right thing to do? I don't think it's bumble foot because she seems to be walking on the foot ok its just the nail thats bugging her but is there a way to know for sure? Their roost has been on the wetter side since I live in the tropics and I really need to put some more roofing on it. She has a twisted nail on her other toe that commonly falls off and grows back without needing my attention but this nail seems much worse than her twisted one. On a side note I just started noticing one of my chickens poops has red seed like things in it, I don't believe it's blood but I can't for the life of me figure out what it is because it looks like little seeds which we don't have anything like that here in the tropics.
