I'm not sure if I am posting in the right place, but my local feed store has a blackhead vaccine. We plan on raising turkeys and chickens together. We also have some wild turkeys here. Can anyone tell me how the vaccine is given and if it is necessary. I a complete newbie to this. Our turkeys will be here in june, the chickens will be here this month. Chickens will be vaccinated. Do I need to add a dewormer?
Thanks for the help
Carol

Gamebirds and chickens should never be housed together.Turkeys need a gamebird feed which contains meds for blackhead, not to get rid of blackhead but to help prevent it.All birds should be wormed twice per year, more for the digging species.

I have raised a bb bronze turkey with my chickens for a few months now and they are all fine, I also am raising some poults with geese, chicks, ducks, and guineas and they are all fine, I think it depends on what area you are in if you want to raise turkeys and chickens together

Check with your local county agriculture extension office to see if Blackhead is an issue where you are. The fact that your local feed store is carrying a blackhead vaccine is not a good sign. If blackhead is an issue where you live, do not raise chickens and turkeys together. Keep the turkeys in their own separate area that has not had chickens on it for at least the three previous years.

If blackhead is not an issue where you live then you can keep chickens and turkeys together and you do not need a blackhead vaccine.

Depending on the local conditions a dewormer may be a beneficial step once or twice a year. Where I live, I have never seen any signs of worms in my poultry so I do not worm mine.

Good luck.
