I transformed my coop (it's actually a really big dog cage lined with hardware cloth) into a blackout box, using Eclipse blackout curtains to block out the light. Are these blackout curtains breathable, though? Yesterday I left a crack for breathing but some light shone in and set them off. Would it be fine for me to cover the coop completely/are these curtains breathable?

I'd be concerned about doing this in the Ca. heat.

a dog crate is not suitable for a coop outdoors

My own coop is not yet finished so my chickens are IN THE HOUSE LOL in 4x4x4 dog pens with perches. They go outside in a mobile but not predator proof tractor coop in daytime (after 8) and come back in for the night (before 8pm)

and no totally covered like that you are increasing heat in the cage, reducing ventilation and collecting ammonia which can damage their respiratory system

it's as big as a car..

then it is a dog kennel not a cage. a cage is a crate. My guys are in a 4x4x4 pen in the house at night and even so I'd never cover them tight like that although I dearly would love to to keep the roo from crowing at 5 am

Even so you cannot cover it like that not in a warm area
