I got a group of Lavender Orpingtons from Hodges Farms. They were shipped on Monday and scheduled to arrive on Tuesday, however, did not arrive until Wednesday morning. Three were DOA and one died shortly after I got them settled. The rest seem to be doing fine except for one that is very listless and already seems smaller than the others. It can stand, is eating a bit and drinking, but doesn't move around much, just sits, and is very inactive. When I pick it up, there seems to be no weight to it whatsoever. Should I be worried? Is there anything I can do for it, or do I just wait it out and see how it does?

It may be too stressed from the shipping to make it, or just weak from the start. Either way, I'm not sure you can do much for it other than offer sugar water and/or electrolytes.

Be sure and contact the hatchery about your problems, so they can compensate you.

I had one like that--hard boil an egg, mash it up, and feed it to your listless chick. If it feels like there's nothing to it, it's not getting anything to eat. I hand fed mine like this for quite awhile until she could hold her own with the others. I did this several times a day at first. You don't have much time to "wait and see" with the little ones--don't delay. Get some poly-vi-sol liquid pediatric vitamins and add several drops to their water. Best of luck! Hang in there!
