Will putting bleach in my ducks pond also help to keep/kill mosquito larve? How much should I use? One of my ponds is around 100 gal. and the other is 3 to 4 times that. They were pools at one time. Thanks

I'm not sure. We have put bleach in a duck's water before as treatment for a Sinus Infection, but never used it for anything else duck-related, except cleaning out a small swimming pool. You could always try and see.

I believe there is not much bleach needed to keep water clean. I guess you just don't want to go overboard on it, right? Just google this info : minimum bleach needed to desinfect water and go w/it. Anything above I believe would be toxic and not increase cleanliness...

Why not just use Mosquito Dunks? They are pretty cheap and much less dangerous than adding bleach.

My somewhat educated guess is that the bleach would not do that much for the mosquito larvae if it were a weak enough solution not to make the ducks sick.

Bleach will kill the good flora in a duck's gut.

I use a few rosy red minnows or comet goldfish for mosquito larvae in our rain barrels. They clean up the wigglers within a day or two, and eat algae. If they are large enough, the ducks likely won't be able to eat them. Or, small enough and the ducks would eventually eat them but in the meantime you have something that will eat the larvae and provide protein for the ducks.

In any case, at some point that water is going to be so rich it needs to be changed out. You probably do change it out from time to time, but just need something to help with the mosquitoes between changes.

I get the fish for about 15 cents each at a pet food store.

This was discussed recently about using bleach in our ducks pool water, I for one would never use bleach in something they may drink out of. A good scrubbing is the best thing. I use a broom and scrub all over the pool then fill with fresh water, then the kidde pool I change water completely every other day, but still add fresh each day. the stock tank I only change once a month but I have a drain so as I am draining I am adding fresh and using the broom to clean sides and bottom, then I add H2o2 food grade a couple times a week, sometime Oxine ah is added. Actually to have 13 ducks and 2 geese I can keep the pools pretty clean doing this, The only time I use bleach is when cleaning all waterers once a week, the rest of the time I use Oxine and water .
