My Australorp laid an egg the other day that had a little blood on it. Today she has blood dripping from her egg vent. What would be causing this and what can I do for her? She is eating and walking around her pen squatting every few steps like she has to lay an egg.

How old is she? I would isolate her in a dog crate with food and water. Has her vent been possibly pecked by another chicken? Sometimes new layers will occasionally lay an egg with a blood smear on it. Bleeding from the vent is rare. Could she have suffered a prolapsed vent, and the others have pecked her? Can you post a picture of her vent? Make sure the chickens are not overcrowded, or not getting enough protein in their diet, which can lead to vent pecking and cannibalism.

She is one. Is a prolapsed vent when it partially comes out.

I am very sorry for your loss. Do you think that you could do a necropsy on her to try and determine what was wrong? Cancer could be a possibility, or possibly something like fatty liver hemorrhagic disease. Your state vet or a college poultry lab may be helpful in finding a cause with a professional necropsy. In that case, it is best to refrigerate the body, and ship it or take it on ice packs. I can help with contact info if necessary.

Thank you for the advice. I already buried her. She was a pet as well as a laying hen and I couldn't bring myself to do anything but bury her. Have 11 chickens left.

I'm so sorry for your loss. A few days ago I lost my beautiful barred rock Edwina to an impacted crop. Condolences.
Love barred rocks I still have one. Thank you for your thoughts. Sorry for your loss too.
