I have 7 pullets getting ready to lay. No roosters. One easter egger started laying about 3 weeks ago. Our RRI is the only other one doing the submissive squat. Two days ago I was throwing scratch and my one laying hen plucked out a feather from the back of my RRI. I assume that she didn't like her getting there first. At that time she had no noticeable bare spot. Yesterday my RRI had a noticable bare patch in the saddle area about 2 inches long. Ugg, so I ordered a couple of hen aprons and got some no-peck lotion to put on it today. Today she is bleeding and the patch is larger. I cleaned her up and sprayed her with Vetericyn. To top it off I found her first laying egg in the coop (not in a laying box). I moved her into a medium kennel in the garage. I have several questions.
1. Do I need to cover the wound?
2. How long to keep her separate for healing?
3. Should I give her extra protein? Is mealworms sufficient?
4. Might she still lay eggs?
5. Do I need to get a larger kennel so she can move around more freely? Currently she has room to lay in there with her food and water but that is about it. Also it is about 45 degrees in the garage all the time. Will she be ok by herself without extra heat? She usually roosts with two others in the coop at night when it gets down to the low 30s.
She is the only one who seems to like me so I hate to see her suffering...
