I have a silkie chick that hatched early, so it is alone in the brooder at the moment. I have paper towels down with a few wood shavings on top & there is no wire bottom. I went down to check on it this morning & saw little reddish brown spots all over the paper towel. One of the toes is injured. I have had to put syptic pencil on it twice, but I think I finally have the bleeding stopped. Do I need to do anything else? Was the syptic pencil the right thing to do? What do you all think happened? I am scratching my head...

Is the brooder inside? Where in your house, is the brooder located? And no other animal has access to the brooder? Is it covered?
There doesn't seem to be anything that it could hurt itself on, the only thing I could think would be maybe mice? Is the brooder covered?

The brooder is inside and I have never seen mice in our house, nor do I think they could get in the brooder. We also have three cats that have access to everywhere but the room where the brooder is. Could it have pecked itself that hard??

That would be the only thing that could have happened. You'd think it would stop when it started to hurt

It is pecking, probably because it is attracted by the bright color. reapply the styptic , try getting styptic powder from a pet store- better than the pencil. you could then try covering it with a very small piece of masking tape to protect the styptic'd area.

they exist for small parrots...
but probably overkill for a peep!

If only they made the radio/elizabethian style collars for chicks. You know the ones a dog or cat might get after surgery?
