One of my Barred Rock ladies lost the sight in one eye last year. She did okay with just the sight in one eye. But it looks like the other eye is now almost completely blind too. There's no infection that I've seen. Just gradual clouding over. Her comb is bright and she is otherwise entirely healthy, though she's at least five years old (I've lost track).
But yesterday seems to have been a bit of a turning point. She got lost trying to get into the coop and I found her looking disoriented in the yard. She couldn't find her way out this morning. I brought her out and put her in the flat rubber water pan and she drank a lot. I tried showing her the feeder and finally had to put her in the pan. After a minute she started scratching a bit and then eventually started eating, though a bit hesitantly.
Has anyone had any experience with a blind chicken. Any suggestions for management? I'm thinking I may have to separate her, maybe with one other hen that's gentle? Will she be able to manage life completely blind?
