I had a bit of a disastourous hatch last weekend and ended up helping one out 2 days after the rest hatched. Hes smaller than the rest but eating, drinking, growing and nice and active. Seems happy and looks well. Apart from he has a blister on the back of his head. I noticed it the day after hatching and have monitored it. Its now 5 dys from hatch and its grown. Today it looks bigger and saggy.

The other chicks arent interested in it and it doesnt appear to hurt when I touch it. None of the other chicks have anything. Shall I just wait and see? Its grown a lot but does appear to be going down now. Is this something scary to worry about?

Does the lump feel soft and squishy or is it hard? If soft, you can sterilize a needle and, after putting anantibiotic ointment on the blister, slip it in at the base of the lump to drain the liquid. Paint with Blu-kote afterwards to protect from infection and pecking from other chicks.

If it's hard, it could be it's a cyst. But watch for reddening and swelling. Right now, I wouldn't touch it if it's hard.

Soft and squishy. I'm loathe to pop what looks like a blister though as that can cause all sorts of problems with infection. I think its actually gone down a little bit more so I'll just keep monitoring it and hopefully it will keep improving. Such an odd thing though!
