Blizzard

Snowed in so able to watch some interactions we do not typically see. Free range birds did not leave roost until 2:00 PM. Most of feeding station and surrounding landscape under about 22 inches of snow. Dominique pullets and flock of starlings briefly shared perch in sun. Just prior to this shot, virtually all perch not covered by pullets was covered by starlings (> 75)

Later, the boys flew in and drove starlings off.

Wildlife is eating more than half of feed put out for chickens.

I don't even know how much snow we got but some of the drifts were mid thigh, and I'm 5'11". It took me and my daughter Menolly almost an hour to dig out the run. I first went out to rescue the feeder, it was under the old coop, protected (I thought) from the elements, and filled with 6" of snow. I put the feeder inside the coop and have not seen the chicks all day, needless to say the HATE the snow, in the past the only reason that they would come out would be to get to the feeder. The waterer is in the coop so it wont freeze. I've checked on them and they all seem happy enough. But goodness are they spoiled!! LOL I hate the snow too so I don't blame them.

We have had 7 storms since the end of December...well over 3 feet of snow.. our covered run has crashed down but the chickens are warm and cozy in the coop. Mine won't come out in the snow but I find if I put out some straw for them to walk on they will for a while....they are not very fond of the wind and go running for cover. I did get my first egg this week so I guess they are doing just fine.
