Hello all, just wondering if anyone has any input about a button quail hen that has swollen up to look like a baseball? She behaves normally except for the waddle due to her distended abdomen, she does not feel or appear to be eggbound. Her abdomen feels like a waterballoon,no feces or obstruction around vent, she just looks like a feathered baseball! please help with any thoughts,i don't want to lose her over this...Thanks!

What is your button quail's diet?

How long has she been bloated?

She could be obese, have fatty liver problems, or it could be a tumor but the more info you give us, the more we can help.

i have a female quail that is bloated, she has been in a small cage for months now, because she attacks other females, her diet in this time has been mixed bird seed( mainly budgie and canary seed), carrot, lettuce, celery, and apple, i think she has been under stress because she cries out for other birds a lot, i hate separating her but as you would know they are quite nasty when they fight, she looks like she is full of fluid, and starting to limp around because of it, i am not sure how long she has been like this , probably only a couple of days at the most, she had a piece of fresh poo on her when i picked her up this morning, so i say she can do that!!! so please any help would be appreciated..

Start by discontinuing the use of celery and lettuce. These two veggies are only water and fiber and will lead to malnutrition. The diet you described is not adequate for quail. They require much more protein than seeds provide. They do best with at least 24% protein. Game bird feed and turkey starter are both good choices. Look for the non-medicated brands.

Make sure she isn't eating any apple seeds as they are poisonous. And only feed fruits as a treat since they are very high in sugar.

The use of celery and lettuce (iceberg, not leafy) can cause water retention which can lead to bloating.

Other causes can be:
Egg binding
Staph infection
Other bacterial or viral infections.
Constipation
Tumors
Hemorrhaging (though death is rapid with this)

More info would be helpful. What do her droppings look like? Are they runny, dry,or normal?

I hope this helps. Good luck!

could she be broody? they puff up the breast area to cool off when broody. I do agree with above posters to stop celery lettuce and limit the apple or other fruit. She needs high protein feed, 18-30% non medicated, to be healthy. Could you post a photo? good lcuk
