For every block you need two 4 inch squares plus one 5 inch square. This will make a 6 1/2 inch unfinished block and you put 4 together to get a 12.5" block.

I actually ended up making 49 blocks for a 7x7 layout of 6 inch blocks. I hope to post a picture of the Christmas quilt top soon.

I had originally made 48 thinking I would make them into 12 inch blocks but when I started playing with the blocks I added one more to be able to do the 7x7 lay out.

I voted for the small version of the Big Star block but I can't stop doing the exploding block. LOL

I am already planning another scrappy one if we do not do this one for the swap.

Indeed two 4 inch blocks and one 5 inch block will make one 6 1/2 inch block.

I am also thinking I want to make an I Spy kid's print fabrics Exploding Block quilt.

Have you seen on utube the pineapple exploding block which is they keep adding to the exploding block to make it bigger. I like that better than putting 4 of the smaller exploding blocks together to make one 12 1/2 inch block. This is just a thought.
