Blog post by city council member on chickens-- please help?

Great idea, Sonoran....I should try that.

Thought about going to speak to the city council, but I absolutely hate speaking for groups of strangers, so I ended up making individual information packets for each of them with a letter from me and a bunch of articles about people keeping backyard chickens locally and around the country-- including the results of a study that showed how much healthier their eggs are. Went to FedEx/Kinko's and copied it all, and shipped it off to them along with a copy of the "Mad City Chickens" DVD. Oh, also with a note about the upcoming screenings of the movie in Dallas.

I wonder if there will be any response?

Wifezilla, I couldn't agree more with your views....and I also really like your C.S. Lewis quote.

Based on what I have read on BYC, maybe dog owners need a pen permit. They don't seem to be able to keep their dogs in their own yards resulting in much chicken mortality.

Besides, the biggest cause of damage to my fruit trees are stupid squirrels. If someone could train an elephant to kill squirrels, I would raise it myself

I love stupid squirrels, so can't really help you there. But I bet an elephant could be trained to pick the little buggers off tree branches with its trunk. Of course, it would probably eat the fruit on the trees as well.

Hmm, similar to the problem with having dogs guard your chickens. "Don't let those other animals eat what I'm trying to guard. Okay, got it. Hey, but the thing I'm supposed to guard looks very tasty...."

OMG, some bit just wrote S^&* about BYC on there!

Here it is.... darn i wish i would have read them all before posting

If you want to read about all the potential problems people have with backyard chickens, read the message board at backyardchickens.com says alot. Problems with mice, racoons, noise, smell, diseases, and other unpleasant things. Very interesting

I appreciate it, but please be polite...even if the person you're responding to isn't. Taking the high road just makes them look bad instead of you.
