Hey y'all! Recently I've had two hens die quite suddenly. The morning of, they both seemed fine, then next thing you know, I come out and they're just dead! We cut them open and dissected the bodies...and came across large blood clots in both birds. (I would like to mention, that both these birds did not die at the same time. They died a few months apart.) They were not even a year old...and just died due to these abnormally large blood clots in their system! Sad to lose such young hens, as they were good layers. Any ideas on what may be causing this? Thanks in advance! 👍

Sorry to hear about your loss.

Where were the blood clots located in the body?
Did you take photos?

Hard to know the cause, if you lose another and want a professional assessment, send the body to your state lab for necropsy. https://www.metzerfarms.com/poultry-labs.html

You can do some searching and see if Fatty Liver Disease fits what you saw.

The first clot...I don't remember where that was located. But the recent hen we lost, that blood clot was in the lower right side of her abdomen. It was about the size of my palm. I did get a picture, just didn't know if anyone would want to see it...it's kinda gross🤣

Sorry for your loss. It sounds possibly like fatty liver hemorrhagic disease as @Wyorp Rock posted. I found a large clot inside my hen’s abdomen after she died. The liver can be tan as well, there is usually a larger amount of fat in the body, and my hen had some yellow ascites fluid when her belly was cut open. Fatty liver has a number of causes, such as a genetic predisposition, feeding more carbs than a balanced layer or all flock feed, and being overweight. Here is a good article to read about fatty liver disease:
