Blood in rooster's semen?

Then by all means hit your backspace button and do not read further. Most of us have never encountered this problem and are interested to know. My 12 year old read the post and I assure you she is not offended or ruined for life. But then again, she does not think she was delivered by a stork either.

Not everyone has the luxury of a poultry vet or even one that knows a roo from a hen. That is why this forum is so vital to chicken owners... sometimes all we have is each other to solve problems and emergencies or concerns.

This is about a natural mating function and should be discussed openly and honestly with adults and children instead of trying to shield them from the facts. Because if they have a hen and roo at home...they are going to see it happen. I believe this thread has been handled in a very clear, plainly spoken, explanatory and non-sexual or offensive manner.

Lobzi..carry on my dear. You need to contact Moodene on here and get her to make you a diaper for chickie so he can hang out in the houes with you more.

Since you have never had birds before or been around them I can tell you that many roosters get rough in their mating. There is nearly always a chase involved and the rooster will grab the hen by the back of the neck and then mount her. They will also do a thing called treading where they rake the hen's back with their toenails.

Usually you can tell a favorite hen by the bald spot on the back of the head and lower back. If a rooster has long spurs they can sometimes puncture the skin under the wing and even cause serious injury.

As the others have said two roosters is often one too many and I have had ones that got along for years together and then one day go after it with just one desire, to knock #1 off the heap by whatever means neccessary.

I have even lost a rooster or two through the years by them fighting through the wire of pens. I would seperate the other two roos that you have too just to be on the safe side.

thank you, he stays with me whenever I am home (unless Im vacuuming that is, he is scared of the giant beast that roars!). I made him diapers but as you see from the pic, he is less than thrilled. I found that it was not worth it to make him wear them as he was so distracted by them we could not have fun together. Id rather just clean up after him. Its really not a big deal and a very small inconvenience for the pay off of the joy he brings me.

Gee, can you blame him? Diapers on a hearty cockerel... oh the indignity!

As for the cleaning up after him... well my dear, if you are happy with that, then as Cetawin would say, "Carry on."

That you have pet-i-fied him so well is encouraging. It was a lucky day for him, the day you happened by.
