Hi guys

Today I noticed that here is some blood in my turkeys poop.

They are 2 and 3 week old bourbon red and blue slate turkeys. I keep them in a brooder build in a closed off porch, and that space has worked great so far. There are 37 of them.

I haven't noticed any strange or lethargic behavior and they are eating and drinking normally.

Do I need to be concerned? Should I get some antibiotics right away?

I'm concerned about coccidiosis but I don't want to medicate if I don't need to - I'm trying to do this naturally and chemical free.

Any suggestions are much appreciated

as akways, Thanks!
Jerah

Corid is what you need to get first thing in the morning. It is very safe--not an antibiotic, but it blocks the thiamine in the coccidia. Dose is 1/2 tsp. powder to 1 gallon of water or if using the liquid 2 tsp. to 1 gallon water. Use for 5 days and change the water daily. They may need to be assisted to drink since poultry may not eat or drink well during a coccidia outbreak.

I'm not sure Corid will work for turkeys because they are effected by different strains of the disease than chickens.

Also, the poo is not as bloody as my research shows it would be with coccidia. It's just kindof a red brick color.

... thoughts?

Actually amprollium (Corid) is the only drug that the Textbook of Poultry recommends to treat turkeys. They say to treat 2 days on, then 3 days off, then 2 days on. Then you can repeat this if there is not improvement. Sulfonamides can be used but they say they are hard on turkeys. Yes they have different strains as do all animals--amprollium is one of the drugs that is used to treat cattle and other large animals. I don't have turkeys, but it appears they don't get the very bloody stools that chickens can--just blood streaked. Maybe the color in the stools is something else. They should be showing other symtoms like lethargy.

I have also today noticed in my 8 weeks old turkeys blood in the poop, should I treat them and if so with what??? I'm in France and they are not happy to treat Turkeys with ABX, I do have some Dimetridazole (Alazol) would this help???

Do your turkeys live with chickens?

Dimetridazole can be used to treat blackhead, and maybe necrotic enteritis. Can you post a picture of the bloody poop?

Sorry no pic's!! I didnt think of saving it lol. No, the turks are all alone, as yet I don not have chickens. I did look at some poop pic's on site recommended on here and it could suggest, intestinal lining, they are all really active chasing me around the pen, eating and drinking, there was no further bloody poop yesterday, so I'm not sure, Do you have turkeys??

After a long chat with my vet, treatment for turkey's here is limited. Dare I say lots of people say they have pigeons and obtain the ABX that way, so I'd have to by online. Do you have turkeys??

From your description - they are active, eating and drinking - what you saw may have been a bit of intestinal shedding.

fwiw - Coxoid (Amprol/Amprolium) is a Coccidiostat , not an antibiotic. Coxoid only treats Coccidiosis which is a protozoa that lives in the intestines. http://www.merckvetmanual.com/poultry/coccidiosis/overview-of-coccidiosis-in-poultry
