Hello-I found a large circular blood smear on coop wall slightly above roost where a chickens butt rubs at night this morning. I see no injured chickens, no feet issues, no butt issues, all acting like healthy chickens. They all are 5 months old, a couple just started laying young eggs. Black astrolorp, barred rock, buff Orpingtons. Any ideas? Could this be from starting egg laying? Again, I can’t find a bird with any prolapse or protruding egg, or blood on butt. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. This is my first year, read many books, but nothing beats your experienc.

it must be something I can’t easily see.
Combs and wattles have a lot of blood flow.
That means a tiny injury can make a big bloody mess, then have a tiny scab, then be completely healed in just a few days.

So unless you find something else, I am guessing it was a comb or wattle injury that was so small you cannot even find it after it scabbed over.
