blood spots in my eggs

We have had chickens for the last 7-8 years and have on occasion gotten a blood spot in our eggs. We always have had a rooster and was always told that is why the blood spots. Our rooster died just after Thanksgiving 2010. Just when the wether changed and the hens stopped laying eggs. Over the past month we are getting eggs from the hens again, we have no rooster. Every egg we have cracked open has a blood spot in it. We have more eggs with blood spots on them then when we had when our rooster was with us. Is it something we are doing wrong? We are feeding the same diet that we always have. The only difference that our hens are without a rooster. Our hens never hatched peeps, even though they have sat forever, but never any peeps. Any help would be great. We want to eat our eggs, not through them out because of a gross blood spot that we see when we crack open a freshly laied eggs.

This is so weird! This morning I had a bloodspot in my chicken egg! And I remembered your post and now I am concerned!

i am by no means an expert, but i have heard that chickens can store sperm for aa while.....we got rid of our rooster 5 days ago, and yesterday we got our first egg and it was fertilized! so i asked around, and thats what they told me.....

i dont know about you guys, but our spot didnt look like that at all...just a little speck in the egg white that connects to the yolk.....actually, ours was brown. not even red

Blood & meat spots have nothing to do with the eggs being fertile ~ they are a glitch in the hen's system. The eggs are safe to eat with or after removing the blood spot. You normally don't see them in commercial eggs as they candle them and remove ones with blood & meat spots.

Eggs can still be fertile as long 3 weeks or more after the rooster is removed from the hens

My spec of blood was real red. And it was in one spot of the egg. It didnt look like anything shown in the picture. It looked more like bloody tissue
