It’s been 12 hrs since first external pip 9am Thursday. There was an hour of strong activity around 3-4p in which I saw blood well up in the hole. I haven’t assisted at all. I’ve just checked and see no further activity. The blood now looks dark and dry. Is it possible for a chick to break into one of its own blood vessels and kill itself? I haven’t done a lot of incubating, but the hole shape seems really weird to me. Maybe an unfortunate weak spot in the shell?

Yes that can happen and it's usually fatal. I would suggest trying to intervene and peel the shell and membrane in the incubator to see if it's still alive.

I did that with my last hatching egg cause he took to long to come out, he's alive now.

I didn’t see this last night. This morning it has progressed, so I’ll just continue watching. I guess it hurt itself and needed some recovery time. I’ll be watching for fatigue, but it’s working the zip line as of now.

Im not going to, but it is so hard not to open it up and just crack the rest of that shell off! Still progressing and I’m leaving it alone.
