Hen has been limp the past weeks I’ve tried isolating her giving her Tart cherry and low protein/calcium chick feed since she’s not a layer and maybe she has gout? But she’s not improving at all. And now I’m noticing blood in her poop. They can’t be related can they? Can’t afford to take her to the vet. What would you do in this situation? Put her down or try something else? At this point she just sits in her poop and doesn’t move much. And please don’t come on here judging me, we aren’t against putting our poultry down only if it’s absolutely necessary.

Photos attached below. She’s just laying in her poop now not moving much.

Will she eat or drink? If she can't get up and move, humanely euthanizing her may be the kindest option. The blood in the poop could be coccidiosis. Especially if she's younger and closer to the age they're more susceptible to it. But i don't think I've ever heard of it causing the feet to swell. Coccidiosis can be treated with Corid, but it might not be the only thing going on. Hopefully someone with more experience will chime in soon.

Yea I have Corid but the swollen feet is what baffling me. They seem to be getting worse now that she won’t move. I’m having to clean her bottom in warm water cause she’ll just lay in the same spot all night and then the next day she hasn’t moved at all and there’s so much poop behind her. Unfortunately the medication for gout is only prescribed by a vet I think it’s slowly killing her. She’s getting weaker. She’ll eat and drink somewhat but becoming less interested.

Poor baby. I'm so sorry. 😔

I am so sorry.:hugs

This is a part of chicken keeping, but euthanizing the first is always the worst. Please do not be too hard on yourself about not taking her to the vet. Chickens are VERY good at hiding illnesses until it is too late. I suspect a vet visit would have had the same ending with a large expense.

How old is she? This looks like the hen you have posted about a couple of times recently. It was hard to tell if it was gout or possible mycoplasma synovitis. Is there any way that you can have someone hold her upright so you can get a picture of both legs and feet standing? She sounds rather miserable. I would make her a chicken sling chair. Samples are here on the first 2 pages along with the basic design:

Blood in the poop could be from coccidiosis, worms, or another condition such as cancer or others. Sometimes it can be kinder to put down a chicken that is suffering, but that is really your choice. The sling can make it easier for her to eat when food and water is placed near her. She should have periods of rest out of the sling as well.

Swollen feet can be a sign of a heart or liver issue, something causing bad circulation or allowing the buildup of fluid or toxins. This could have allowed cocci to get a foothold in her as well and also she wouldn't have been feeling good enough to move about much.

I'm so sorry you and her went through this :hugs
