My roosters butt is all raw from the girls picking at it so i quarintined him in a dog cage with wood chips & food & water. And this morning i out blu-kote on his butt. And i locked all the girls in the coop, and he is the only chicken out right now. And i was wondering does blu-kote prevent the girls from picking at his butt, do i really need to quarentine him or just put the blu-kote on 2 times a day???

Thanks! ~Trista~

I would quarantine him for a few days to let him rest and heal. The hens can really hurt or kill him. Up his nutrition and watch the back end so it doesn't develop problems like maggots etc. If possible wash his behind with warm soap and water and pat dry. Get a good look at whats going on so you can treat accordingly. Neosporin (with out the pain killer in it) would be the best for a few days then switch to blu cote.

How many chickens do you have in your coop/run? How big are the coop and run? Are the hens eating the feathers or just picking on him?

The coop should have 4 square feet per bird and the run should be much larger for obvious reasons. If the hens are eating the feathers they have a protein deficiency.

I have 16 hens and one rooster, im not sure how big the coop or run is but i know there is 4 ft per bird, and the run is even bigger, prob. 2 times bigger. And the hens are pulling them out, but i dont know if they are eating them. Also the hens eat feathers on the ground all the time and they chase eachother for the feathers, what should i do about that??
