Blue and self blue question??????

Actually, I've found that while ideals birds may not conform to the standard in regards to type, the coloring on the self blues surpasses anything I've seen produced by breeders working on the variety.

Here are some self blues I got from Ideal, compared with my self blue cockerel...

Wow, those pics are great, LilPeeps. Thank you! I am definitely going to order a couple of the self blue from them. They will certainly add some beauty to my flock!!!!

I ordered the self-blues twice from Ideal this year. Out of the first four, I got 3 roos and a pullet (had a very nice vault, but had an extra toe).

I ordered six more at the end of July, and four chicks died the day after I recieved them. The remaining two were roos, and they are going to their new home on Friday.

I am definitely ordering some more self-blues from Ideal. While the foot feathering or crest size isn't that great, the color in my opinion is very good.

I'll have to add some recent pictures of my boys to show you all.

Wonderful pictures! But I just wanted to clarify that blue is an "incomplete dominant," meaning that it will dilute the base colour, but not completely. That's why one copy of the blue gene on a black base will give you a blue bird and two copies gives you a splash. You need two copies of the gene to give you the full dilution effect. If it were a true dominant, then black + splash would give you a splash.

Blue is more of a light black and self blue is more of a gray color. Self blue breeds true. But when you breed blue to blue you get 50% blue, 25% black and 25% splash. I have self blue moderns and blue moderns.
