I have a few blue australorps that I think are absolutely gorgeous. I read that blue australorps are an uncommon color. I plan to hatch more of them when they start laying. My question is…If I wanted to hatch some to sell, do you think it would be difficult to sell them? I am fairly new to chickens so I wanted to know if this is a good or bad idea. Thanks for any opinions/advice.

A few pictures of my girls!

Hi! Your birds are beautiful. I use to have a black Australorp and I loved her. I’ve never sold chicks but am planning to one day I think price can depend on where you are and how you sell them. I like Facebook farm page since it’s easy to access, I would say $3.00 are a good price for chicks but you can go a little higher since they are rare.

How are you planning to advertise your chicks for sale?
Where are you planning to sell them?
Are there chicks for sale in your area already? If so, are there Blue Australorp chicks? If so, what do they sell for?
Have you looked into any necessary permits or paper work that might be required?

I don't think that would be difficult at all! I went to a hatchery to get a Black Australorp to add to my flock (along with a few others) because I read they're good layers and handle Texas heat well. They only had Blue Australorps left so I grabbed one and she's easily my favorite. So beautiful! I'm so glad I ended up with a Blue. I plan on getting more in the future.

Thank you so much! Australorps are truly beautiful birds! I am on several Facebook groups, and I agree, it’s the best way to advertise chicks! I think I am definitely going to give it a go! Thank you again for the advice!!

I am on several Facebook groups that are constantly advertising their chicks, and many people are always on the look for chicks on these groups. I plan to sell them online by advertising them from my home. The location could change if I need to. No one in my area sells blue australorp chicks. In fact, I am not sure if I have ever seen blue australorp chicks for sale in my state. The only place I have seen blue australorp chicks for sale was online through a few hatcheries at certain times of the year. I looked at the online hatcheries prices for these blue Australorps, and they were $5-$6 a chick and they upped the price tremendously for older chicks. I haven’t done any paperwork or anything like that yet because I wanted to see if this would even work. If it does work, then of course I will do any necessary permits and paperwork etc.

They are truly beautiful birds! I am so glad you ended up with a blue australorp too! They are quite the characters haha. Thank you so much for you advice!

Are you planning to sell them as straight run, ie, unsexed?

What I've seen, as far as pricing goes, is that pullets get the highest price, and straight run and cockerels are priced lower.

I live in Lone Star area of east Texas. What hatchery did you go to?
