I have a pretty fellow, a light blue barred roo, that I am wanting to keep. How will the blue affect the offspring when mated to regular barred hens? Will they all be black barred? And if I use him on a buff hen? I am still totally clueless when it comes to the buff colouration I have to say....

I am pretty cluless too but I think if you put him over a black or blue hen you will get 1/2 barred and 1/2 solid. Then the normal blue/black /splash color possibilities would still be present but I do not know if the splash would bar. Ok scratch this I have no idea, sorry.

From what I understand of barring, if you use a blue barred roo over black barred hens, all the offspring will be either blue or black barred.

I thought we would get all barred but wasn't sure of the base colour. What about blue over buff!?

Thanks for the help folks!

I like the blue barred, he is a really pretty bit of eye candy! Be great if I can have some hens like that too!

Now what about the blue barred over buff? I have absolutely no idea of the buff gene workings...

My experience with black barred over buff is that it muddles the barring, turning it into more of a laced pattern with gold (or silver) and brown, instead of white and black.

Here's on result of a barred rock (dad) over a buff orpington (mom):

She's a pullet. I really need some updated pictures, they're lovely birds and close to egg laying age now.

Here's a cockerel from the same combination:

Some pictures of the silvers from the barred rock/buff orpington:
