Blue/black/splash genes

How does it work to breed for the blue color? It seems like I read that you can't just breed blue to blue and end up with blue. What about black? And splash? And lavender? I know very little about color genetics, so be gentle...

Blue x Black = 50% Blue 50% Black
Black x Splash= 100% Blue
Splash x Splash= 100% Splash
Black x Black = 100% Black

The lavender gene which is the same as Self Blue gene breeds true. lavender x lavender = 100% lavender

Thats one of the nice things about breeding blue is all the different colors you can get in your breeding. I seem to get the best looking laced blues from my Black Cock over a Splash hen. I also breed Self Blue Old English they breed 100% True. Thats what the forum is for everyone to learn from each other.

Hey Hcammack,
I have a question for you after looking at your website. I bought some cuckoo marans from a hatchery about 4 months ago. I only kept a pair and sold the rest. They are the clean legged ones. My question is one of them has yellow legs and one white legs and I cant figure out if maybe the hatchery hosed me over.Tell me what colors yours have and maybe I can figure out whats wrong with mine.

OK, I have another question already. It just hit me what Donald said about lavender. Self blue. I thought "self" meant "solid". Do you get lavender sometimes when breeding for blue?

The lavender Gene and Blue Gene are totally different, Lavender(self blue) Gene breeds true
