I have blue andalusians. The color description in McMurray's catalog says that a blue on blue mating will produce 50% blue with the other 50% being black, white, or black-white combination. The description goes on to say that blue x white, or blue x black or black x white will produce blues. Doesn't say anything about the black/white combination. So my question is... what's the best cross to get blues and what if any color cross would fail to produce the blue color at all? I do have some basic understanding of genetics so feel free to be as complicated as you want or need to be!

Have you tried a search of this forum? Blue crosses have been discussed extensively, at least once a week there is a similar question so there is loads of info to peek through.

To answer you question quickly, the catalog is incorrect. BluexBlue gives 50% blue, 25% black and 25% splash (white with blue splashing). Substitute their 'white' with 'splash' and it's more correct. White chickens are a whole different ball game.

Hi! The white they refer to is splash --- white with blue/black spots/splashes.
The only cross I know of to get all blues is:
Black x Splash = 100% Blue.

From the other crosses, you can expect:
Black x Blue = 50% Black, %50% Blue.
Blue x Splash = 50% Blue, 50% Splash.
Blue x Blue = 50% Blue, 25% Black, 25% Splash.

Thanks everyone! Couldn't figure out the crosses based on their info. It just didn't make sense. Makes much more sense now.

What other genes influence how white the splashes are? I'm curious because I have a clean white bird from my blue/black/splash bantam araucanas, and I've been wondering about her. She is the only clean white bird in that flock.
