Glad you can have roos; that means that yes you can eventually become your own "breeder." Does yoir easter egger/isa brown cross roo have a pea comb or straight comb? If you can get a pure-bred blue egger roo next spring, that would more quickly get you to your goal of larger, brighter blue eggs, especially since u want to limit your overall chicken count numbers. From what ive previously read, cream legbar and true ameraucana eggs tend to be medium size. But that may have changed in the last few years, & maybe there are breeds/breeders producing larger blue eggs now. Sounds like you are wanting a colorful egg basket. Since you will be able to select your own eggs and hatch your own chicks, you can do it. Good luck with your future artistic endeavors!

here is a picture of his comb. Not a pea comb, it hangs over his one eye!!

I planned on breeding him to my non ee hens, to see if any of the pullets produced green eggs to verify if he had the blue egg gene, but it would be easier to get a blue egg rooster and save a step. Keep my population down. I'm giving the eggs to friends. I can't keep up with the eggs i'm getting already, and I feel funny charging friends for eggs. Although it is nice when someone gives me a couple of bucks to help with the feed costs. My birds free range all day, but they still eat a lot!!!!

I've eaten several of my roosters, but I don't really care to kill them after I raised them up. You do what you have to though. I want to keep it to a minimum.

Yes he Might carry a blue egg gene since he doesnt have a straight comb, but thats an Extremely modified pea comb. It does have some "pea bumps" on top. ive crossed easter eggers with isa browns too. My hens from that cross lay xlarge to jumbo sizes, and the green ones are nearly-dark-enough to be olive eggs. (The isas definitely increase egg size.) The roos had a comb that looked much more pea-like than your guy. I was never concerned about overall numbers, but yes if you dont want "too many chickens, best to research and choose a rooster(s) that you know carries double blue egg genes. Especially if you intend to keep older hens after lay rate slows down.

Can you post a photo of your gray eggs? Im curious to see them, & whatever the shade of gray, it's a very unusual color.

Prairie bluebell is a new breed that lays bright blue eggs. I'm looking to add a couple when I my older ladies retire.

Also Shetland hens, though they are still rare here in the U.S. and sometimes lay greenish eggs. Bluest egg I've ever seen posted on this site:

I am fascinated by the Shetlands, and not just because my family is originally from Scotland. Everyone who has them comments on how calm and gentle they are. (Also see avatar pic of my four-legged Shetland ).

I had never heard of the Shetland breed. They are really cute and pretty! I did see that the stunning blue egg in the photo was a one-time deal due ro extra blue "paint." Would yes be amazing if a hen/breed consistently laid that color! But most importantly to @Anycockildo , Shetlands lay blue AND green eggs. He already has green egg layers and is wanting guarranteed blue egg layers that lay large size or bigger.

@Anycockildo , after you make your final decision as to what breed you choose, let us know. Meanwhile hopefully more blue-egg laying breeds will be suggested here.
