Blue Laced Red Wyandotte THREAD!

I have a blue hatched last week out of your stock, one really big blueboy next to the others the same age.

Here is our 7 week old BLRW. Would love to hear everyones opinion on gender and quality of the bird. The lady we received the hatching eggs from said from what she has hatched ( a lot from what we understand) she says hen. and we have posted in some other threads but are still unsure. We only had one BLRW hatch with this one so we don't have another to compare to!

And here is our 3 1/2 week old BLRW from a different hatch.

@ dblea202, my guess is two boys. The first one for sure. At 7 weeks old there should be no wattle or comb development and he definitely has some. Same with the second one.

:) I am also a fan of good quality splashes but the red still needs to be a good deep mahogany color verses an orangy red. The deep mahogany color is what experienced breeders have been working so hard at producing and is what is considered ideal for BLRWs.

The 7 week old is a boy. The second one is still to young to know for sure.

Quote: i agree the type just isn't there, sorry... as for color, you also want to avoid any 'brassy-ness' in the hackles... a sure sign he doesn't carry the required mahogany red...

also, looks like he has what's called 'split breast' in the cochin world, don't know if that's a flaw with wyandottes, but i think it is. (the crease going down his front).

did he come from a breeder or hatchery? that's usually a good clue as to overall quality to start with... a serious breeder breeds for type and color, the hatchery breeds for what lays and hatches the best. usually 2 totally different things.

bantam cochins have been my primary love for going on 20 years, while i've had some (decent, IMO) blr wyandottes since last summer (a pair of bantam and a trio of LF).

while i like the wyandottes, i have to say my primary LF breed is still the silver grey dorkings.
