Blue Laced Red Wyandotte THREAD!

Can anyone comment (just from curiosity sake) on my BLR roo and hen? Both 2 yrs old. Pet stock birds and just trying to educate myself. Is he considered too brassy?

Sorry!! Only one I can find of her so far!!

Also, are my chicks BLR, or EEs?

Quote: Erin, thanks for posting more pictures. They do not help. Please take a day when you can cage them or table top them and take pictures. Front, side, over the top, and rear shots. Yes it is a long process and a pain to do, but, it is the only way I can give an assessment with any accuracy. I go by *type* first and color last.
I am interested in that top male and bottom male. Take pictures of your roundest hens and ones you have chicks out of and post those also.

If you have any feathered out chicks by either of those birds please post those. They have to produce better type to have any breeding value.
Need advice-my BLRW roo had his feathers on his back plucked (I'm assuming) during the introduction phase into the big run. The next day all his tail feathers were gone. I removed him into solitary and sprayed Veterycin 4 times daily for several days. By the end of June it was looking better and feathers were beginning to grow back. He went back out to join the flock. There were feather shafts evident. This 4th pic was today. I don't know what's happening. Sprayed him with Veterycin today. But noticed how pink his skin is also. Any ideas? When this originally happened he was in a brooder cage inside the run. He was with another BLRW roo and 4 silkies. They all hatched same day and were together since hatching. Thanks!
It could be anything. It looks like more than feather pulling from the damage. Nu Stock might help. Blue Cote will help with pecking. I would isolate this bird till you know what is going on.

. I like the type of your top bird. Not crazy about that comb or color.

It is hard to guess about cross breeds. They look like BLRW chicks, but, they easily could be crosses.

I was going to give my foley girl (blrw) some chicks since she's been broody for so long... glad I didn't, a raccoon got hold of her last night before the dog could get there. so now she's in the hospital cage with bite marks around her head and neck... not sure how badly damaged, but she's still alive. her balance is messed up and she just sleeps a lot right now. i'll try getting her to eat and drink some a bit later again. the only marks on her are around hear head and neck. the rest is un touched. but she can move her wings and feet, so i'm hopeful it's just temporary damage.

Sorry about your girl. Hope she improves. I used to have a lot of trouble with raccoons until I made my Australian Shepherd earn its keep by being an outside dog. I had trouble with one pair that kept coming in the cat hole in my storage shed and got very fat with the cat food I stored in there. I finally set a live trap and filled it with cat food. Caught both of them. A lady I know had a fine Labor Day dinner for her family with them.

sorry Karen. I hope she get better. it is just not been a good week for wyandottes on BYC.

I have been reading about protein levels in feed. A lot of opinion about what to feed. I have read that roosters need 9 - 12%, layers 15 - 17% and chicks 19 - 22%. I would like to know what you feed. At the present time none of mine are free ranged, so address if you would for them. While I do give them some additional things from the home and garden, I would like to know what you would feed them if they were strictly on a processed feed diet.

Do you agree with the percentages?

When would you change the percentages for the chicks?

What would you feed the rooster after the change?

What would you feed the hens after the change?

There is so much information out here and so many opinions. I know that many on this thread are very successful with their chickens and many use different methods, but many do not have the alternative feeding sources and need to rely strictly on the feed store. Some of you are so filled with chicken knowledge .

Would you agree that 4 square coop feet and 10 square run feet is sufficient?
