Blue Laced Red Wyandotte THREAD!

I won't comment on type as I am new. But it looks like she may have leg mites... something doesn't look right. Could be my phone. As the pics always come through small and a bit fuzzy. I hope I am wrong.

I wish you the best of luck at the show!

Question for the veteran BLR breeders in the crowd. I have been corresponding on a Brahma site with predominantly British breeders. They have a pretty decent population of blue partridge, and blue buff/red columbian Brahmas, apparently both patterns when in splash phase are lumped into a red pyle catch all catagory. Anyway one thing I picked up from them is the theory that breeding blue to blue tends to produce muddy paterns, their thinking is a splash - black breeding produces much crisper patterns. Not sure if a blue - black breeding is thought to keep the pattern as sharp.

Just curious what the thinking on this is ? Different pattern but theory should be the save. I know the buff laced Brahma breeders are having issues with washed out patterns if the don't breed in some black lacing(gold laced) pretty regular. Now they are working with dominant white so not sure if same theory applies.

Also they are pretty big on double breeding over there. Cockerel breeding pens, versus pullet breeding pens. I knew some old timers who did this with Brahmas, using males with very little saddle lacing to produce cleaner light and buff pullets. Has anybody gone to double breeding BLR, and if so, (if your willing to share), what do you look for in pullet breeders, cockerel breeders ?

I am not a Wyandotte breeder but not alot of info out there on this in Brahma circles. Been working on these for a while, mostly trial and error.
it entirely depends what you're breeding FOR... with lacing you don't tend to get the muddiness if all the required genes are homozygous. (pattern, melanizing and Columbian).

with blrw (and brahma too apparently?) you don't want splash to splash because you lose the intensity of your mahogany red... blue to blue is just fine, unless your blue starts becoming too light, then add in a black to deepen the blue's color.

I would prefer to have blue and splash laced girls with a nice black laced roo, personally. but my own roo is about as dark blue as you can get, and with a splash and black laced hen. all the chicks so far have turned out very nice.

she did have leg mites, I just got rid of them so her still look funky, but she should be ok for the show. And thank you :)

Quote: She needs more conditioning for the show. Her feet should be perfect and they still show signs of infestation. You can soak them in epsom salts than coat them in NuStock a couple times a week. Use a nail brush and scrub those legs and toes. She is very tiny and possible a bantam at that weight. LF pullets should weigh 6 1/2-7lbs. If she is a LF she needs her diet changed to get some weight on. What are you feeding her?
I would bath her and start conditioning for the show as soon as possible!! If you need additional information let me know and I can send you links.

This is my 5 week old (hopefully girl) do you think she will darken in color?

My BLRW chicks are hatching!

I notice difference in markings, some are pronounced (center) and some are more mottled (left). Any speculation on final coloring/gender of the 2 BLRWs? (chick on right is a silkie)

The one on the right is a female and the one on the left is a male..I am usually 50% correct.
Actually you can tag the one on the right to see if it holds true. It sometimes does in some lines. Usually not in dottie unless it is hatchery based and than they are sometimes cross bred for the purpose of sexing. Both your chicks look possibly blue.
