Blue Laced Red Wyandotte THREAD!

The bird in post #890? That's totally not a splash-

From thw pic I see your roo is actually a splash I think.. see the variation of blue in his lacing? And his tail shows black.. and the other is a black laced red.and thats good. Splash on black is 100 % blue.
Type is good, but the roos legs look small compared to him, but I dont know if its a point reducer. They look older then 5 months.. the red on them should be deeper.
And since both have brassy look, it will be hard to get rid of.
Lf i know takes around 18 months to mature, and around 8 months to lay. Not sure with bantams.

I'm familiar with the genetics of blue, but actually, i disagree. he is blue, not splash. splash wouldn't have the even blue tone to every feather, with slightly darker edge... and i don't see any brassiness to either of them. it could be the way the light is reflecting on their feathers? she is not a mahogany red, but definitely not brassy (which i have experience with, in the oegb...) as for age, I doublechecked with the person i got them from, she verified hatch date was 3/29.

no matter, thanks for your opinions. but i'm not parting with them just yet. since they are still young, and as you said, take a while to mature, i'll give them some time. Dorkings are also a slow growing breed and I find my pullets are still changing color at 6 months +

I am thinking of getting a new rooster to add to my pen until I can get one from Foley in late fall. Please help critique this boy as he needs a new home and he may work.

  1. Would you consider his comb to be con caved?
  2. Would you consider his legs too pale?
  3. Is his back too long?
  4. How is his tail carriage?
  5. How are his wattles?
  6. Is the color on his neck and hackles correct?

Yes, his comb is concaved.

His color is very brassy/too orange-y.

I only breed back the deep Mahogany color for fear of breeding in the orange color.

Just my 2 cents.

what do you have as a roo in your pen currently? maybe you could post pics of him as well to compare?
as for this guy, yes, the comb appears concave. his legs are yellow, so that's good. not sure on his back tho, and wattles look a bit large, but i've only got a cockerel to compare to so that may be just me.
as for color, i can't tell if the photo's a bit washed out or what, but he does look more gold/brassy than what i've seen as ideal, at least on his hackles/saddle. but it could also be the camera doing that...

here's a couple pics i took just today, with hubby's camera, for contrast to the previous pic i posted

Honestly your two roos are more of what I am looking for. I want thin lacing, not brassy, and really yellow legs.

Quote: well, the one on the left is the roo, the other is his hen. her lacing is a bit wider than i've seen on others, but I like her. she isn't my ideal for breeding, but i'll take what i can get for now, until i can get better. typically you would want to avoid the shafting and 'smudging' i think it's called (black specks in the center of the laced feather).

I'm hoping to get some birds from Foley next month, but i'm having surgery on my hand that same week so not sure if i will make it up there... depends if i can find someone to drive.

Heck I am jealous that you live close to him. I would pay someone to pick up birds and ship them for me too. I spoke with him a couple months back and he said he will ship to me maybe in Oct if weather permits. I can not wait!
