Blue Laced Red Wyandotte THREAD!

Ok. So I don't want the split breast? I want a darker color in the splash? And what else?

I just stole two of our BLRW chicks before anyone could buy them. They are all MINE! Happily in a brooder with a BCM and a Blue Orp. I cannot wait to see how they grow out. I think I picked two blue, but one may be black.

However I had to separate my BLRW roo from his hens today.

One of the girls is showing skin. He has three hens and they all look horrible.
Good for you for finally keeping some of your chicks! My BLRWs from you are doing well. They are now 19 days old and one still doesn't have many wing feathers. They are only about 1/8 inch long! Talk about slow feathering! The other chick has feathers on his wings and coming in on his shoulders. I can't wait to see how they grow out. What made you keep your two. What were you looking for? When I get some more spending money, I want to get some more eggs from you!

I'm glad to hear they are doing well! Can you see any color coming through yet?

We are setting up BLRW pen number two at the moment as we have two juvenile pairs. One of those roos is going to do into my BLR Orpington experiment pen though. The agreement was that we can have BLRW pen number 3... but we had to get through our chick waiting list first. These were the leftover two so I kept the two with the most blue fuzz.

Now I get to see them grow!

Probably not the best place to ask then, this is a thread for people owning & breeding pure BLRW, not many of us would spend the time or money to raise crossed Wyandottes, though in some other breeds crossing varieties is something you might do to improve type, I don't think it's commonly done in Wyandottes, and that's clearly not what you're talking about here. Someone said before if you ask the question, be prepared for open and honest feedback. Yes, your chick looks like it could be a splash, but as it is a cross, no one here could tell you with certainty.
I guess I did not realize that this thread was so elite, I was under the impression that the only "pure" Wyandotte was the Silver Laced, as all Wyandottes have come from this color. (By inter-breeding.)

I also never said I did not have pure bred Wyandottes,,,,,,,,my flock is all pure bred, having come from some of the best breeders in the country including Jerry Foley.

All I ever wanted to know was if anyone else had come across this color,,,,,,,,,,,,As I do not sell chickens I did not realize I would offend anyone by "indiscriminately" breeding my own flock.

Open and honest feedback is, and always should be welcomed. Just not at the expense of someone asking a simple question.

Lets see if this can be explained without digging a deeper hole. The thread is for people who share an interest in the Blue Laced Red Variety of Wyandotte. Sharing an interest in specifically Blr's most haven't got much interest in an offshoot color. The regulars try to be nice in case someone new might catch and share our interest. Then we explain that we are here to learn about a chosen Variety while new peeps become angry whether the explainer was nice or naughty. :hugs

Honest, you can do whatever you want with your flock it's fine. Just don't expect the regulars to jump up and down with excitement over the results of a cross. It's so difficult to keep the approved and not yet approved colors going strong. I'm sorry if we sounded a little impatient with you. When your chick gets a little older maybe someone on the main Wyandotte breed thread can guess what color you ended up with from your Varietal cross.. :frow

the blue laced red is a project variety. overall the goal is to improve on wyandotte type over birds that have the required coloring for the variety. outcrossing to other breeds does NOT improve type, color, or anything else for what we're working towards.

yes, the original variety of wyandotte was silver laced. since then several other colors have been accepted into the SOP, but regardless of color, the body still has to be a wyandotte's. so yeah the other colors were introduced somewhere along the way, but then the challenge is getting rid of the other birds' genes in terms of size, stance, feathering, and overall conformation. the only thing left of that other bird is color.

with blrw, there are enough good birds out there now, that the goal should be breeding to improve type first and foremost. especially if the ultimate goal is to have the variety recognized by the APA and included in the SOP.

so posting crossbred birds that are PART blrw is fine and dandy, but don't expect everyone to ooh and ahh over them, since that's not what we're on this thread to discuss...
