Blue Laced Red Wyandotte THREAD!

So when looking at a wyandotte, their bodies should be round and compact? So far I'm understanding her red is a ok color, could be a deeper mahogany. Her comb looks decent, her legs are a good color, but she shouldn't have any white in her neck. I wish I could see a good example in person, I really do learn better hands-on!
carrie..go to a show..find people who show wyandottes..ask them questions and ask them to help you go over a bird to feel what you are looking for in a Wyandotte..
Invest in a scale..if your pullets are not over 6.5lbs they are too small..males over 8lbs. Weight gives you a good place to start in making final decision. Invest in the SOP (Standard of Perfection). It can be purchased online and directly at the store at the APA. (see my signature line). It can give you valuable tools. Your instincts are correct. It is much better to get your hands on a good bird.To feel the deep keel. To feel the flat shoulders. etc. Wyandottes weight 8lbs but they look 10 lbs. Nice solid sized birds.

The NEW BLRW eggs are FERTILE!!!!! YEAH!!!!! Can't wait to see what I get with these new girls.

Now if the others were fertile..... like Marans....

Speaking of Marans..Have you ever crossed one with a dotte?

Quote: No.... never thought about it really...... what has crossed your mind with them????? The yellow leg thing scares me. Hard to get that out of white skinned chickens..... I would be crossing ALL kinds of birds if that barrier was not there.

Well that and TYPE

DMRippy, You wouldnt have any golden cuckoo marans would you? Dying to find a breeder with some good stock.
No, I don't. Mine are just Cuckoo/Blue Cuckoo Marans. No gold in them. Raven1 has Goldens..... I think she still does. She was down sizing a few months ago not sure what she sold off. There is someone on the Cuckoo thread with some nice looking birds.... she sells on Ebay too.

I am loving the BLRW critiques, it teaches me so much! Keep em coming! :)

I have the 5 chicks where I wasn't sure of the gender because of their comb size (and 1 pullet is inverted comb). Happy to say that the 3 non-pink combs are still non-pink so I'm telling myself they're probably girls!

My favorite roo DoublePink got the leader on his comb bit off. I put nustock on it to help heal and hide it from the others. Ugh, I hope it grows back.
DoublePink continues to have a lot of red on his hackle and chest area, with less lacing than all the others. I hope his lacing comes through, since he is far and away my first pick based on his personality and temperament. What a sweet boy. I know that you can't judge them on their feathers yet, but I cannot help comparing him to the other male, who has amazing lacing.

I had some BLRW eggs in the incubator but sadly, only 1 hatched (shipped). It looks like a girl, but it has a single comb. She is from the same source as the other BLRWs that I hatched, they all have rose combs. So I potentially have 2 boys and 4 girls, but 2 of the girls have DQ combs (1 inverted, 1 single).

I have also ordered 2doz more BLRW eggs for January so hoping that will deepen my pool of options here.

My question -- I think someone here said they would breed for type before combs. Can anyone tell me about comb genetics? Eg if I breed an inverted comb, or a single comb, what are the % odds of getting that trait in her chicks? I'm also considering keeping them for egglayers and removing them from the breeding pen only when breeding. Unless I get a high # of girls without DQs from the January hatch.
