carrie..go to a show..find people who show wyandottes..ask them questions and ask them to help you go over a bird to feel what you are looking for in a Wyandotte..So when looking at a wyandotte, their bodies should be round and compact? So far I'm understanding her red is a ok color, could be a deeper mahogany. Her comb looks decent, her legs are a good color, but she shouldn't have any white in her neck. I wish I could see a good example in person, I really do learn better hands-on!
Invest in a scale..if your pullets are not over 6.5lbs they are too small..males over 8lbs. Weight gives you a good place to start in making final decision. Invest in the SOP (Standard of Perfection). It can be purchased online and directly at the store at the APA. (see my signature line). It can give you valuable tools. Your instincts are correct. It is much better to get your hands on a good bird.To feel the deep keel. To feel the flat shoulders. etc. Wyandottes weight 8lbs but they look 10 lbs. Nice solid sized birds.
