I will have them outside hopefully by next week so I should be able to see them better in the sunlight. What about the second pic that you marked dark blue? it has white tips on the feathers. is that just something to cull out? is this normal in BLR's?Even though they look dark, they aren't actually black. I am looking at the feathers around their butts and tails; if those are not TRUE TRUE BLACK then they are not blacks. you need good lighting or sunlight to see this in photos.
The last chick who does look quite dark, still is not black.... see the grey in his leg fluff? that is not black!
Here is a Blue next to a Black and a Splash
you can see the blue is quite dark, but still grey. the black is really dark, and shines green in the sun..
My black laced red rooster had white tips on a bunch of his feathers when he was young. Now that he's 6 months old, most of those feathers have been replaced with ones with the correct coloring. He still has one or two with white tips on his wings, but I'm guessing he'll lose those next time he molts. It's surprising how much their color can change as they grow! I was so sure that my other boy was blue... but when he started getting his adult feathers in around 12 weeks or so, it became clear that he was a splash!I will have them outside hopefully by next week so I should be able to see them better in the sunlight. Does your splash always carry his wings low and not tucked? If so I wouldn't choose him but I wouldn't breed a splash either so. JMHOTrying to decide which roo to keep. They are ravaging my girls and being dumb, chasing them down and I think it's worse because there are 2 of them. One breeds a pullet (they are 23 weeks old, 3rd gen Foley) and the other interferes then chases that same girl down to breed her as well. Anyway, I have decided to get rid of one and wanted opinions on who (for now) shall stay until the chicks I got are mature.

I free range so it is helpful to keep a roo or 2 for flock protection but they are just not playing nice and 1 needs to go. Otherwise they are very nice cockerels, I just wish they weren't rapists![]()
I read many places and heard from many people it dilutes the blue. To get the best blues breed blue to blue which is what I do.Well, I think he may have been doing his dance here. I will try to get a better pic of him when the sun comes up, but I do think he carries his wings a bit low.
May I ask why you wouldn't bred a splash?
