I have a deal worked out with a local grocery store to provide me (my hens) with produce they take off the shelf because it's getting too old or ugly. They also give me the trimmings from when they dress the produce. Yesterday there was quite a bit of purple cabbage in the mix. This morning when I went out to take care of chicken chores I found all of their poo was blue. Kinda funny. I also found that my girls aren't particularly fond of celery, but love lettuce, cabbage, potato skins (diced), apples (diced), and will eat cilantro and green onions if they're mixed in with the rest of the stuff. As a bonus, it smells like a salad in the hen house now, and they're eating way less mash. Last week my 11 birds went through 10 lbs of produce per day. Who'da thought?

I may have to try a small, locally owned grocery store. I tried a big chain once, and they turned my down. It seems they thought they'd have liability problems if a person ate the produce & got sick.

I ran into the liability problem with the first 3 stores I tried. I was surprised how much produce a very small local market throws out. It looks like I'm going to routinely get 30 to 40 pounds twice a week.

I have been turned down by all of the organic stores around here. PCC just started using their leftovers as a production of methane. Great for the environment, sad for my chickens

That is awesome that your store will give them to you.

It's funny how the pigment in the food effects their "poo" so much.. Mine tend to have widely fluctuating colors based on what they eat and is an easy way to tell if they get too much calcium.

In the small town/village where I live we actually have a store called "Ma and Paw's". It's a supply store about the size of my living room. They're prices are high, but they do me a favor by selling me lay mash for the same price as the big stores in nearby San Bernardino city. About $15 for 50 lbs. Fortunately, the Village Market gives me the produce for free, so it should really cut down my feed costs, plus the pleasure of rainbow colored poo.
