Splash x Barred Plymouth Rocks. So they are not really a hybrid becuse they are the same breed. I'll know by this summer what kind of egg layers they will be.

Okay I was going to say it couldnt be a true sex link because you cant breed them. They are infertile.

you CAN breed sex links. They are not infertile, they just dont go broody and will not set their own eggs. And sex link X Sex link doesnt equal another sex linked bird.

in example, a RSLxRSL will not produce another RSL. The offspring will be "mutts" and looked like the RSL pullets, except with a light gold belly and flecks of white in their wing and tail feathers, from pics I saw.

I know this because I have several RSLs and gave a dozen more than likely fertile eggs to a man down the street to hatch in his 'bator after a stray dog killed most of his flock. I live in a fairly rural area, this man is my closest neighbor, about 1/2 mile down the road. I only met him because he was looking for survivors, and unfortunately there was a dead roo in my yard, and it was not mine.

They have not hatched yet, but they were candled and its hard to see in the darker brown shells, but at least 10 of the 12 are developing nicely. He is on day 14 or 15. Nearly every "eating" egg I crack is fertile. The can "do it" just fine, fully capable of reproducing and producing chicks, just not broody to sit on the eggs themselves. My down-the-street neighbor doesnt care about the breed per se, he just wants egg layers of decent temperment capable of free ranging, and also of confinement, that will survive our deep snow and frigid winters. I offered him some free eggs that would likely hatch in a bator, and he gladly accepted. Im getting a dozen australorp chicks in a few weeks, in the hope of them setting their own eggs as I dont have a bator. I am sure I will get some RSL eggs hatched by one of my aussies when they are old enough, and even some RSLxaussie chicks. I have a VERY amorous RSL roo that I intend to keep. He even "loves" my tiny little Antwerp Belgian bantam. She however does not love him. Hes around 7lbs and she is around 1 lb, maybe less.

Perhaps when the neighbors eggs hatch, I will post some pics.

there is an excellent thread on this forum somewhere on sex-links and how to get true sex linked birds. Silver gened mother, gold gened father, somethin like that for RED sex links... its very interesting.

I know this is off topic, not a "blue sex link" answer, but I just wanted to state for the record, sex links are NOT infertile, just not broody.

silkie33...very nice!

Your're right that they are not infertile, but some can be broody, most production sexlinks don't often go broody, but if you crossed breeds that are known for broodiness like Silkies, Cochins, Brahmas, and some of the heritage breeds, the those would produce sexlinks that would be broody, as long as you cross the right colors.

OK since we are on the subject of Sexlinks. Is it so that one of the reasons for Sexlinks is that you can sex them as chicks due to different coloring?
