I read as much as I could, but am genetics challenged. I just got this baby, which surprisingly (to me) kept warm in below zero temps in an unheated greenhouse in a cardboard box in northern Illinois, with her blue slate mom. Royal Palm tom. Does sex linked mean I can tell if this is a boy or girl? Only thing I know is that it is black and I'm calling it Winter. It's either a barred-black semi-color semi-gray Narragansett female, or a barred-black semi-color semi-gray male, is that right? Do those 2 look different at hatch? Thanks for any help!

A Royal Palm tom over a Blue Slate hen will produce sex linked poults.

The possibilities are Mottled Slate female, Tri-color Mottled Slate male, Mottled Black female and Tri-color Mottled Black male.

Yes they can be differentiated while they are poults.

The Tri-color Mottled versions will have a small brown spot on them in the head area. They may have more than one brown spot but they will have a least one brown spot.

The Mottled versions will not have any brown on them.

If there is not a brown spot, it is female. If there is a brown spot, it is male.
