I would really like to get some blue slate turkeys........Do they live long??? or do they only live a year and there legs brake and you have to kill them. They would be just pet and live out there life her on the farm. So i was just wondering if they die young??? And do you have to watch the blue slate turkeys weight ??

I'm selling the last of mine now ..Hope she gets a good home ... but im in Ireland

I bought blue slates last year. Kept 3 of them. They are doing great. I now have 9 poults from them. 3 of the poults are 8 weeks old and 6 more are 4 weeks old. The adults seem very healthy and not heavy. They are way different the BBB that I had several years ago. I am expecting to have these for while.

I have a tom that is 4 yrs. old now. They're a heritage breed, so they're closer to wild turkeys in body type, meaning they don't have the problems with their legs that the broad breasted breeds do, and they also weigh a lot less. I read that a domestic turkey can live up to 12 years in captivity, so if you want to keep one as a pet, expect to be around as long as a dog or cat.
