Here's an update on blue! It's official, Blue is definitely a GIRL! yay! She's a momma's girl for sure, she's getting big, but loves to cuddle up with me still. I had her sitting on my lap today, and listened to her baby peep turn into a little quack. (or not so little, when I left her to get some Kale from the kitchen!)

she'll be four weeks old tomorrow, her feathers look silly, but are growing in nicely. Let me know what you think, now that she's getting bigger!

Hey, I'd be willing to try. My problem is that I'm still learning what is a good lookin' duck, and what's to be frowned upon. Blue Belle is beautiful to me, but she's my baby so of course I am biased!

Ducks are easy to show because they give themselves a bath so you don't have to bathe them.

Basically, you maintain her on a good diet so her feathers look nice. Then you enter, take her to the show and put her in a cage.

The judge comes by and looks at all the birds and picks the winner. You'll get a ribbon hung on your cage if you win. Then, there are more prizes. if your duck wins the Best Swedish, it is eligible to compete for best medium size duck and then champion duck and then grand champion waterfowl, if you can beat the geese (not easy to do). After that there is best in show.

There is a little more to it than that, but that's the basics.

It's as much a social thing as a contest. You admire everyone else's birds and you sit and visit with your friends and meet new people who are interested in poultry, so you have a lot in common.

Unfortunately, you are in Utah, so probably won't be showing in my area. I'd be thrilled for you if you showed up and beat my Swedish. I do all I can to encourage people to get involved in showing Swedish ducks. There aren't very many of us with show Swedish.

Also, I like to enter the county fair. I get free passes and really enjoy every feature of the fair. I have to be there every day to care for my birds, so I enjoy all the shows and exhibits while I am there.

I found out there is a contest for eggs! I hope to enter a dozen eggs in the fair this year.

I've been so back and forth about what breed to get, what not to get and so forth. I love the Ancona because they're each different- However, my Swedish has been my favorite bird as far as her personality goes, AND she's growing up to be beautiful. I've been keeping an eye on KSL in case I can find another swedish close to my area to come be Blue's buddy. Everyone loves their own breed of ducks but I'm really happy I went with this one. I haven't had any of the problems I have had with my others. (aggression, anti-human, skittish/flighty) Most of the time she just follows me around the yard.

I'll have to check into some of the local fairs, and stuff. We'll see what happens! She's got a ways to grow up anyhow.

Whats the personality like on the Swedish 70%cocoa? We just aquired a blue as well from my daughters class and havent really seen much on their temperment etc.... They are cute as heck tho lol! Congrats on your cutie ducklover!

I find that the Swedish are pretty easy going, for ducks. They aren't too skittish and can be handled fairly easily, even ones that haven't been hand raised (though they don't really like being picked up). I hope that you are enjoying your new duck!!
