Blue vs. Lavender

Sandypaws, The tufted gene is lethal in the homozygous state (two copies). Homozygous tufted chicks usually die in the shell at about 19 days of incubation. Living tufted birds are heterozygous (one copy). The rumpless gene is not lethal in the homozygous or heterogygous state. It is also not lethal just because a bird has the tufted gene. Araucana APA and ABA standard requires a bird to be both tufted and rumpless.

Tufts occasionally grow in strange places (like internally), and thus are occasionally lethal in a heterozygous state. And while it is almost always lethal in a homozygous state, there are a very few cases of homozygous birds living to adulthood.

Rumplessness is often related to low fertility, so breeders will sometimes use tailed birds paired with rumpless ones.
