Oh- I love them either way. I think these are the prettiest chicks from the prettiest eggs I've ever had

Just hope it's not another welsummer or blrw fiasco. No matter ho many eggs or chicks I got they all ended up being roos

I LOVE your girls Halo- hoping to get at least one in there! Do you have a pic of one of the roos? Don't know if I've seen them.

Gorgeous! Even the EEs are awesome. That's the type I've been trying to get, but I keep ending up with black & white ones. All my EEs are going in the Welsummer coop- don't know if I'll get olive eggers, or if I have it backwards? I just think the mix of wellie x brown/wheaten-ish EEs would be prettier birds.

I've been thinking about this a bit more since getting a couple of replies in my Inbox.

It wouldn't surprise me in the least to find out I'm so lacking in attention to detail as to miss something as obvious as being able to tell males from females as my mind has been pretty much like scrambled eggs this year. If that is true, then I am definitely going to have to take a lot more notes with this next bunch of eggs I hatch out in a few weeks! I swear I haven’t been able to tell my males or females that early though and often times can’t even tell the W’s from the BW’s let alone a SW. Seems like Paul or Mike or Jean or somebody also told me that you can’t tell until they start getting their pin feathers in and then they could be a male if they have dark pin feathers on the back and breast.

But, if you saw the pic of my W pullet this year that I posted on the ABC and that all the black ticking, then that can’t hold true either. Btw, I’ll be posting a pic on ABC of another weird colored pullet pretty soon. It is the oddest looking thing and I'm sure would throw someone off as it has BW male like feathers in the chest and back.

Happy, it's hard for me to see the pics real good but if I had to guess right now, I'd say you have two Wheatens vice Blue Wheatens as the wings seem to be a little dark for a BW. And if I had to guess, I'd say the one of the right "might" turn out to be a male just because he looks bigger and more boy-ish but that is purely a guess.

Having said that, now I'm really confused because Halo says the one on the left could be an EE. This sounds like a case where a bunch of females are running together with a male(s) and then the eggs are collected. I just don't understand the statement, "its likely I sent you an egg from the EE. You'll know more as they grow up, they will look very different from the Ameraucanas." So let me ask, when you ordered the eggs what exactly were you getting/asking for?

I ask because from the title of this post and the original question, it appears as if you knew you were getting a BW. The ONLY way to be certain one will get a BW is to cross a W with a SW. Otherwise with the exception of a WxW or SWxSW cross, you could wind up with W, BW, or SW.

Tailfeathers- I think what the situation is that Halo has some EEs in with her wheaten/blue wheaten ameracuanas. One of the EEs lays a really blue egg, and one might have ended up in my eggs- but I doubt it. They all look so similar- it's just a slight cast on the one chick. The legs, beak and tiny feathers are just like the rest. IMHO- she's gorgeous!

I was really hoping there was a way to sex them sooner, but I like Halo's birds so much I'm thinking about clearing out my LF cochin coop and getting more. Alot more! It's not like I live in the city and can't have roosters

I had just assumed that because of the color difference in the adults they might be sexable in the way Welsummers are. (with the boys getting the black in the chest fairly early)

I've been following everyone's experiences with the breed. I know I'm not the only one "taken" with them- and really appreciate the knowledge and images you all share. Thanks!

This is my blue wheaten Aneraucana rooster.

I crossed him with some blue egg laying EEs and this is the result (except for the gold Brabanter). As chicks, the male was MUCH larger than the female and started getting darker wing feathers pretty soon. The hackle feathers on the cross cockerell shows his EE linage, but he is beautiful just the same.

I was looking for a show quality Blue Wheaton Ameraucana rooster to breed to our 2 hens this spring. I live in N. Ca and was hoping that I could meet up with you if you are showing in this area this spring or if you know of someone else who may have a rooster to sell that is show quality? My daughter is in 4-H and this is part of her breeding project & her Jr. High class science experiment. It's been harder that we thought it would be to find what we're looking for as there doesn't seem to be any more breeders in our area. Any suggestion would be much appreciated. Yes, I have contacted registered breeders but haven't been able to work anything out. Thought I would try this out since it is getting so close to our project launch date.

As to sexing wheaten birds, at this age you can easily sex the wheaten pullets and males with black

My Welp Hatchery BBR Cubalaya chicks at 28 days old. Once again, these two chicks show the different colors that the other chicks are. I guess they could be male and female. It's hard to get a good picture of their tails, but they do look like they are lobster tail like (wide and droopy). All of the chicks seem strong and are growing fast.

So, what breed did these chicks turn out to be? I have 2 chicks that are 2 weeks old and their feathers are exactly the same as the 2 you have pictured here. I'd love to see a picture of what they grew to look like. Thanks.
