Hello Fellow Chicken Lovers...I come to you again for your knowledge of these wonderful birds.

My Scarlett has somehow injured the top of her beak. It's a split right down the center, maybe just under 1/16" in length. It doesn't seem to be bothering her, as eating & drinking is not being affected. But I am concerned that it will continue to split and grow larger, much like a fingernail would, especially with the way she hunts bugs and tears at apples and pumpkins. What are your suggestions for dealing with this? Can I hold her in place and file it down like a fingernail? Should it be cut off (I am unfamiliar with how to do something like that - how would I go about it?), or just leave it be? I am afraid that if I leave it alone it could split all the way back and then I'll have a real emergency on my hands.

Any and all suggestions would be welcome. Thanks in advance. Lisa

YOu can trim the beak with the type of clippers used for dog toe nails. Just be sure that you dont trim it back very much, do a little at a time. If the top beak ends up shorter than the bottom beak then be sure to give her feed an a feeder or bowl so that she can scoop it out, rather than on the ground where she would need to peck it. Also, crumbled food would be easier for her if the top beak is a lot shorter than the bottom.

Otherwise, you can trim or file any rough edges off and then use superglue to stick the crack back together.

Superglue is the way to go, it has waorked for me a number of times. Just be careful NOT to get any in the mouth, eyes or over a nostril. In a week or two she wil be fine.

Pheobe's beak was broken pretty badly, the whole tip came off, and she recovered just fine... it was pretty amazing! I did have to hand feed & water her for a couple days when it hurt too much to eat, but after that she was fine. I noticed another girls has a very small split in her beak, too, but I am not too worried about it after Pheobe. I'll bet Scarlett will be just fine!
