BOBWHITE QUAIL CHICK EMERGANCY!!!!!

I haven't even looked into THAT, but just knowing native species, the only way to get different colored Bobwhite would be to go to a different region, ie, breed bobs from Colorado with bobs from Texas.... But then there are different ones like the Blue Scale.... Maybe THEY would be a possibility to breed with, IF YOU HAD A LICENSE to gather them (hint hint) to get different colors?

I've just never heard of different colored Bobwhite, but its not IMpossible, so to speak...

*impossible if you can't even get them to brood! :p

Bobwhites and coturtnix won't hybridize. There have been rumors for many years of the "bob bird" (coturnix/bobwhite hybrid) but no one who claims they're real has ever posted any photo evidence to support their claims. Further, laboratories have investigated the hybridization potential of most quail and never has there been any mention of bob/coturnix hybrids in any evidence I've ever come across. Ask your breeder for photo evidence and see what his response is...

No, we have bobwhites. I want to make a pied bobwhite if possible and I want to try and make a pure black bobwhite.

Cool idea! Pure black animals are a mutation that can be pretty bred and has been done time and time again in other species, so best of luck with that!

Well, you have to watch out for those "mutations" Gitabooks... Like albinism or even Downs syndrome... A mutation in the genes can bring OTHER mutations with it... Albinos are sometimes blind, for instance... And in the wild, a black Bob wouldn't survive long anyway, it would stick out like a sore thumb to predators and not be able to tolerate heat.... They would also need to have a genetic predisposition to solid colors in the first place... Kinda like a Barred gene; bobs just don't possess it.

Yes, I am against albinism, as it leads to eye problems, skin problems, and improper immunity. However, melanism (black coloration in animals) has shown to have increased immunity and can be found in wild populations such as jaguars, leopards, servals, snakes, ect. I'm pretty sure that melanism, can be produced in any animal, as it is just an increase in black pigmentation, just like albinism is a lack of pigmentation.

Yes, I do agree a lot of mutations are bad, don't get me wrong, but I don't think fully black animals are (as long as they aren't inbred).

You make a good point ;)

It's worth looking into I suppose, anything to soak up more information :)

I have a picture of a pure black Bob but it won't post for some reason. It's the only picture I could find of one like it. It's a truly beautiful bird though. I have seen pure white bobwhites though. Snowflakes and just white. I wanted to cross the snowflake, or pure white with my birds to see if I can get a pied color from the offspring, but the chances of that happening are probably slim. I might just get the original color again. But if I succeed you should see these chick's for sale. But that will only be when I can stabilize the new breeds color.
