We got bobwhite quail chicks. we lost 6 already. Can someone give us advise like how warm should they be, what type of feed should we feed we were told Purina grow and plumage is good. Any help would be great.
thank you

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Start them out at about 97 degrees, heat lamp on one side of the brooder, food and water on the other. Quail need gamebird food or something with 24% to 28% protein. You will need to crush it up for Bobs for the first week or two as they are too tiny to eat regular crumbles. Lay down paper towels and sprinkle the feed around the feeder for a few days to a week till they figure out where the food is kept. Use jelly jar lids with tiny stones in the lid and water. They can easily fall into regular water fonts and drown. Dip their beaks so they know where the water is.

Lower the temp by 5 degrees each week for 6 weeks. Do NOT over crowd Bobs. They can and will kill each other even as chicks. So 1 square foot per baby in the brooder. If they start to argue and fight, lower your heat by 3 degrees and then lower it 5 degrees each week from there. Use a red or infra red bulb only. No white light for Bobs.

Definitely stop by our quail section for help with your new babies. Mountain Peeps has left you with the link.

Good luck with your Bobs and welcome to our flock!
