Hey yall...
we've been out of water since this morning, the water companys lines broke from the 20 degree weather last night. It has only gotten up to about 32 today.
When it does come back on,we will have to boil our water, oh lovely.

I'm concerned about the chickens drinking water, would using Oxine help ? Or should I just get some water from the bayou? LOL

Thanks,Miriam

Run the bayou water through a coffee filter, boil it(for atleast 10 mins) should be good for the birds. Though I would probably put in 2 TBSP's of apple cider vinegar per gallon, to be extra safe.

You could also add some iodine or pure bleach(chlorine), but I don't know the mix ratio, other then its very little for the bleach.

By pure I mean like non-scented, etc.

Hi Miriam - isn't this freeze wave something? We awoke to frozen water lines too but luckily nothing broken. Just don't have water in master bathroom - pipes are on outside of house since plumbing was installed long after home was built 100 years ago and we didn't leave the water running on high enough.

All water lines and hoses outside were frozen as well as all water troughs which made it hard to get everyone their water this morning. Luckily I was allowed to sleep in and DH went out and broke up ice and carried out water. I still can't get over moving only 2 hours north of New Orleans where we never even had cold weather much less freezing and now I feel like I'm living at the north pole. Doesn't help that this old house can't get warm.

Bright spot of the day is I just got the mail and looks like I won the Burpee's lottery.

My hubby & I are going to go to a water store in town tonite, we've got some 5 gallon jugs. We're getting extra for the birds, don't want to take any chances.

Isn't this cold weather just lovely,Monique? LOL. It's been awhile since we've had weather like this. Maybe it'll knock back the mosquitos. Burpee's is great isn't it???

Vinegar is a water purifier now too? That stuff is almost as magical as DE!
I've seen my chickens drinking the "treakle" that's the dark brown "water" that runs through the barnyard after a rain. They lived to tell the tale.

if not in any hurry take a 1\\2 taspoon of sodiam hypo clorite ( house hold bleach)
to 4 cups of water stirr for 2 minutes or so and let sit under uv light for 2 hrs or so and the water will be disenfected, and the cl2 will have been dissapated from the uv light if you dont feel safe with letting it sit for only 2 hrs let it sit longer.

The chickens will probably be fine even if you don't boil their water when the supply is restored. The main reason the water co. issues boil orders is as a precaution. As chickens forage & eat & drink all kinds of weird stuff they may run across, I doubt if unboiled water would be that big an issue...
