There is a corner in the duck house that is sort of behind and under some things and semi protected...the "girls" have been laying there and I counted 19 eggs in the nest yesterday...all duck and several different kinds...this morning I was doing chores and went into the duck house to collect eggs from the other areas the "girls" have been laying in...out from behind the wire and boards where the nest is dashed my little brown duck Mabeline (eye make up). Her tail feathers were fanned out, her wings were out and spead in a boxer's attitude, her head was down and she had a wild eyed open mouthed stance...she was protecting the nest and eggs she has decided to brood...her message came through loud and clear, "out of here you big fat human, these are MINE!" What a brave little girl...I backed out and closed the door part way...she can get out to food and water and perhaps feels a little more secure with door semi shut...she cracked me up and is just totally precious...I hope she stays the course and hatches some duckies...day one and counting...

My mallard just went broody, and she kicked my Butt! I tried to see how many eggs she had, and she bit me and smacked me, and I have painful bloody bruises on my hand/wrist... you have to respect that! Congrats on your nest!

Good luck with the nest! I just got ducks and they already crack me up with their antics. I can't wait till they grow bigger and get as much courage and spunk as both yours have.

Oh no! Say it isn't so! I have another duck gone broody where I can not get to her without dismantling part of the duck house...I have no idea how many eggs she is sitting on...I am going to have ducklings out my ears...she is in the twilight zone and sitting hard...she is chocolate with a white bib and all I can see is the bib and her beady little eyes looking back at me from her nest...just stinking cute...

aren't they just sooo cute when they do that? I've got 1 Australian Spotted duck sitting on a nest of 12 good eggs with veins growing in them...about day 8 now...its in a square kitty litter bucket laid on its side, inside a big doghouse. She pulls a bunch of hay in after her when she goes in and covers the whole front of the bucket so we can't hardly see her at all! She's the color of the hay, so we have to look really closely to see if she's even in there! I don't even get near her now...I think she's serious.
