Bonnie's Dream Coop

As close as I could get. I would have loved a bit bigger, but had to draw the line given those pesky finances.

But I am very happy with how it turned out. The coop is split down the middle with a people side and a chicken side. The people side is my work space, a sink, storage for feed and supplies. The chicken side is, well, for chickens. Roost with poop board, sand on floor and poop board, 5 nice sized windows which provide approx 15 square feet of ventilation. I have two 820 cfm exhaust fans. The people side has vents that provide 10 sq ft total vent space. On the outside, "shutters" were constructed so I can close off the vents if needed in hurricane weather. The entire coop is under the overhang off of the barn, so the coop and run are both totally covered. Hopefully, that will provide extra relief from our summer heat. Clearly, this forum drilled ventilation into my head. I added an ac for the worst of the summer, which I have been running during the day to keep my two girls comfortable, hoping it will ease the stress of being moved and locked up. Another big reason I added it was the dehumidifier action on it. I am getting about 7.5 gallons of water a day pulled from the air in the coop it has been so humid here the past few days.

The pics are right as it was finished, and I was getting it ready for the girls, but still getting cleaned up and construction materials out.

It's fantastic! I'm curious though, why the decision to build a separate building rather than enclosing what was already there?

The overhang that is over the coop and run was not there. We added it along with building the coop. I wanted a stand alone for Air flow but extra protection from an extra roof. This gives me ventilation on all sides.

Thank you all for the nice comments. Functional, safety, and ventilation were my big design factors. I am too old to schlep water from the house, or fight a hose in the winter so the big splurge of a sink was worth it.

Oh. One more detail. The backing behind the roost looks yellow, because I put a couple of coats of polyurethane over the paint. It added a yellow tint. But it is harder and more "water" and stain resistant than paint. It should clean easier than just a painted surface.

Thank you. I figured it was now or never. I had really been saving for this over a period of years. With this move, it was time to do it, and I couldn't be happier! I can't wait to add more chickens. After I get these two girls adjusted I'll start working on that.
