Boohoo, my other birds

hcammak!!!

I am building an aviary (outdoors) for the spring. My father is--actually. It will be round wiwth about 8 to 10 foot radius. I am hatching buton quail (which I have had before) and wanted finch. Just a pair or two....advice on some that would be hardy outdoors??? I am in CT. I would like to avoid moving them in for winter, but I happily will if need be. I love the bright colors, but I am assuming the zebra would be the way to go. What about the parrots???

Oh man, I could chat with you for hours!!

Oh well parrot finches are fairly hardy but zebras and soicities are very hardy. One of my friends overwinters every thing outside including Gouldian but down here in maryland it is much warmer and dryer then up near you guys. you could cover it in plastic and have a head lamp inside of it. my friend has plexiglass boxes that he outs in the aviary with a heat lamp and he puts all the food in there the birds can just hang out in there if they need to keep warm. If you want somthing realy colurful you will need to put them inside.

Thanks
Henry

So if I wanted to try parrot finches, I should plan on keeping them in over winter??
Although I like the plexiglass idea. I assume you can mix a pair of parrot finches and a pair of zebra comfortabley?? Will the cross breed or do they tend to breed in pair...I obviously have a bit of homework to do before spring!!!

Again, sorry about the thread thievery!

No I dont think they will cross breed they are both pretty high energy breeds so as long as they have enough room to stay away from each other they should be fine. Yes you should probably keep them inside unless you cover the aviary in plastic. Dont worry get yourself a good mentore i did and it worked well there where a bunch of accidents at the beggining but that was with goulidians. I was only 12 when I started with the finches I am 15 now and I dont have any finches anymore they are very buetiful birds though. GOOD LUCK

Update. The baby Goldian was completely gone this morning. I took the whole cage apart, and no baby anywhere. So I have to assume they ate it, there was no blood in the nest. I took the other 2 eggs and candled them, it looked like just a yoke, and they were 2+ weeks old. So I opened them and there was just yoke. I took the nest out. Time for a rest. Next time, they go to foster parents.
Sad, but I didn't have any expectations to begin with. Karen
